How to "Be Prepared" in 5 Months!

MONTH 1
Provide Out of State Family Contact person:
Please provide this information to quorum and Relief Society leaders.  List to be retained by bishopric to help account for members during an emergency.  Please notify your out of state contacts they may be called during an emergency.

FAMILY HOME EVENING ACTIVITY:  Create your Family Emergency Communication Plan including emergency contact numbers.  Request FEMA chart from Ward Emergency Preparedness Specialist Bro. Landoe.

MONTH 2
Water Storage:  Commercially bottled water in PETE (or PET) plastic containers may be purchased.  Follow the containers "best if used by" dates as a rotation guideline.  Avoid plastic containers that are not PETE plastic. PETE is Polyethylene terephthalate.

MONTH 3
72 HOUR KIT:  Choose from the attached checklist to decide what to include in your 72 hour kit.  Also plan for medication and first aid supplies, clothing and bedding.  Continue adding to food storage until you have accumulated a 3 months supply that you would normally include in your diet so they will be used in a natural rotation.

MONTH 4
Gather Important Documents and secure them in a fireproof container:  After you are fed, dry and warm, you may need to contact your home owners insurance agent.  You may need documentation for family members, such checking and savings account information, birth certificates, wills, trusts, titles to real estate or personal property, life insurance, etc.

MONTH 5
Financial Reserves:  Plan family budget that encourages adding to savings monthly, no matter how small.   Use resources found at https://www.lds.org/topics/family-finances?lang=eng .  “We encourage you wherever you may live in the world to prepare for adversity by looking to the condition of your finances. We urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt. … If you have paid your debts and have a financial reserve, even though it be small, you and your family will feel more secure and enjoy greater peace in your hearts” (All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Finances).
